What are Existing Data Sets in MCH?

Increasing requirements for Maternal and Child Health Programs to collect, evaluate, and disseminate information about current health status and needs have generated the development of diverse data sets. In 1991, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau established the MCH Information Resource Center (MCHIRC) to work on a comprehensive approach to these efforts. The Model Data Set, currently being developed, identifies the critical information for state and local programs working to improve the health of women and children. A first step in the development of the Model Data Set was learning about the existing activities and data sets being used in the field. Requests for existing model data sets were made at national meeting and announced in several professional newsletters. To make this information useful for state and local MCH programs, summaries of these existing data sets are provided on this MCH Web Site.
